Failure to yield car accidents a major problem in Ohio

The Ohio State Highway Patrol has issued a public safety warning to drivers in relation to traffic accident statistics. According to the OSP, the second highest cause of car accidents involving fatalities in the state in 2012 related to failure to yield violations. In fact, over 37,400 car accidents were caused by failing to yield as well as other negligent actions such as motorists failing to stop at stop signs or running red lights.

The OSP has released additional details about the cause of the state's car accidents during the last calendar year. In these crashes, over 23,300 were injured and 187 died. In approximately one-third of these car accidents, drivers 25 years old or younger were at fault. The OSP has urged drivers to be more cautious when approaching and passing through intersections as well as to report dangerous driving activity to authorities.

A driver's failure to yield may be an intentional decision, or it may be caused by the negligence of the driver. Such actions can cause car accidents that can seriously injure or even kill other motorists and pedestrians. These victims and their families may experience numerous costs after a car accident, including expenses related to doctor's visits, hospitalization, medications, therapy, vehicle repairs and other expenses.

Cincinnati area residents who have been affected by the negligent or intentional actions of another driver may be able to seek punitive damages against the driver in a court of law. Through a civil lawsuit, a victim or victim's family may obtain compensation to ease the burden of financial expenses and to find closure after the event. Those who have been involved in such an event may contact a Cincinnati personal injury lawyer to learn more about their rights.
