Toyota models fall short in recent crash tests

Two Toyota cars received poor ratings in a recent crash test conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, which could reflect on their ability to protect drivers and passengers in the event of a motor vehicle accident.

The IIHS is an insurance industry-funded nonprofit organization that conducts a variety of crash tests to gauge the safety of automobiles. They give cars one of four rankings: Good (the best), Acceptable, Marginal and Poor (the worst). In a recent test, the Toyota Camry and Prius V were the only two models out of 16 to receive a Poor ranking.

The organization recently introduced a new test called the "small-overlap offset crash test." In this test, 25 percent of a car's front end strikes a barrier at 40 mph. The test is designed to test how well the front of a car can absorb the full impact and protect any passengers.

The test rates cars based on:

  • how well they protect the crash test dummy from injury
  • how well the safety belt and airbags keep the dummy from moving around within the vehicle
  • how well the car keeps its structure and shape during and after the impact

Car accidents can cause more than physical pain. They can give your vehicle and your wallet a beating as well. If you have been injured in a motor vehicle crash it is essential to work with an experienced personal injury attorney. They can help you review what happened during the accident, pursue any appropriate claims and determine who was at fault.
