I-75 redesign appears to be improving safety, reducing crashes

A stretch of Interstate 75 in Ohio has undergone massive road work under a modernization project that started in 2007. While it may cause delays and frustration in the meantime, the project is meant to update Ohio's overused roads and reconstruct the interstate. This should reduce congestion and improve safety for all motorists on the highway.

So far, it appears to be working. For years the interchange of Ohio 4 and northbound Interstate 75 has been not-so-lovingly referred to as "Malfunction Junction" because of its high accident rates. But in the year since the area underwent a major redesign and reconstruction, crashes have dropped nearly 90 percent.

Last year the three-mile stretch surrounding the interchange saw 151 crashes, a stark contrast to the 1,200-plus accidents in the same area in 2008. This year is looking even better, with only 65 crashes through Aug. 16 - among them only one fatality.

The I-75 redesigned has been critical in reducing fatalities in several ways. The redesign has widened the stretch, creating three continuous lanes of traffic in each direction. This reduces congestion - which can cause accidents when cars are overcrowded - and has the added benefit of easing navigation for emergency responders.

This improves safety by allowing higher traffic volumes to travel smoothly. In addition, the reconstruction involves removing left lane ramps. With traffic entering and leaving the interstate on one side only, motorists can drive with confidence knowing where they can safely exit.

Maintaining and updating roads properly also keeps them in good condition, which is essential to prevent crashes and ensure motorists' safety. If you have been injured in a car accident caused by an unsafe road, consider speaking with a personal injury attorney to learn about any claims you may have.
