University of Cincinnati project to eradicate brain disease

University of Cincinnati neurotrauma specialists are partnering with a West Coast non-profit group called One Mind for Research to cure brain disease. Medical professionals have a 10-year target date to come up with answers that could positively affect the lives of Cincinnati victims who suffered brain injuries in car accidents.

A director at the University of Cincinnati Neuroscience Institute believes local brain injury experts were chosen for the program because of the university's track record with head injury research: the university's neurological research and treatments are used worldwide.

University of Cincinnati researchers recently concluded a study of "brain tsunamis" or intensifying waves of brain damage that occur after a victim first experiences an injury. Brain tsunamis and other types of injuries have been commonly found among injured war veterans, head trauma-prone athletes and motor vehicle accident victims.

Local researchers have also conducted recent studies involving victims of post-traumatic stress disorder and concussions. These individuals share similar symptoms like disturbed concentration, issues with physical-mental coordination and memory loss. Symptoms often first appear long after an initial injury.

A better understanding of the way the brain functions after injury will help One Mind for Research and its eight neurological partners reach its target for eradicating brain disease. Researchers hope to tame the killer brain tsunamis for victims of head trauma by finding out how to prevent the waves from occurring or spreading damage.

Collaborative, national medical research on brain trauma creates hope for future car accident victims in the Cincinnati region. Researchers may also learn how to improve the quality of life for head-trauma patients already suffering symptoms from debilitating brain injuries.
